For the sixth consecutive year, the Melaleuca Freedom Celebration has been named “Best Local Event” in the Post Register’s annual Reader’s Choice community contest. This award, which honors the best companies, nonprofits, services, and attractions in southeast Idaho, has recognized the Melaleuca Freedom Celebration as a standout special event. More than 150,000 votes were cast in this year’s Readers Choice awards.
The Melaleuca Freedom Celebration’s reputation extends far beyond the local community. The show has been recognized by national media, including USA Today, Reader’s Digest, and Travel + Leisure magazine. The Melaleuca Freedom Celebration is the largest firework show west of the Mississippi, featuring a staggering display of over 18,500 explosive shells for more than 200,000 spectators to enjoy.
Heather Gobet, the fourth-generation pyrotechnician charged with firing the show, recognizes that the Melaleuca Freedom Celebration is an extraordinary Independence Day fireworks display. “This show rivals the pyrotechnic giants of Boston, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia,” she says, “as measured by the sheer number of shells in the air.”
For the past three decades, the Melaleuca Freedom Celebration has paid tribute to the nation’s Founding Fathers and our beloved members of America’s military. Melaleuca founder and Executive Chairman Frank VanderSloot explained the event’s significance: “The Melaleuca Freedom Celebration is more than just entertainment on the Fourth of July. The combination of fireworks, music, and message provides magical moments of reflection and an opportunity to re-pledge allegiance to the flag that represents our nation. On a different level, it’s a heartfelt, unifying event for the community—but more importantly, it’s a tribute of gratitude to America’s heroes.”
With its blend of high-flying, ground-shaking pyrotechnics and an emotional soundtrack that synchronizes with the fireworks, the Melaleuca Freedom Celebration has become a longstanding tradition that celebrates the essence of American patriotism and valor.
